About City

Paris, the enchanting capital of France, is located in the north-central region of the country, along the Seine River. This area, inhabited since around 7600 BCE, forms the historical heart of the city, which has expanded far beyond its origins on the Île de la Cité. The city stretches along both banks of the Seine, symbolizing its growth and significance.

Paris plays a crucial role in the Paris Basin, an agriculturally rich region, and is part of the Île-de-France administrative area. It is the nation's most vital center for commerce, culture, and politics. The city itself covers 41 square miles (105 square km), while its metropolitan area extends to 890 square miles (2,300 square km). In 2020, Paris had an estimated population of 2.1 million, with over 10.8 million living in the urban agglomeration.

The historic heart of Paris is defined by three key regions, all shaped by the Seine. The Île de la Cité, at the city’s core, has historically held religious and administrative importance. The Left Bank (Rive Gauche) is traditionally known as a cultural and intellectual hub, while the Right Bank (Rive Droite) has been the center of economic activity. Over time, these distinctions have blurred as the city continues to evolve. Paris is home to numerous world-famous landmarks, including the Eiffel Tower, the Louvre Museum, Versailles Palace, and the Latin Quarter. Other iconic sites include the Seine River, Montmartre, Notre-Dame Cathedral, Moulin Rouge, Musée d'Orsay, Luxembourg Gardens, and the Pompidou Center, all contributing to its reputation as a global cultural capital.
