Dentistry is a branch of medicine that consists of the study, diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of diseases, disorders, and conditions of the oral cavity, commonly in the dentition but also the oral mucosa, and of adjacent and related structures and tissues, particularly in the maxillofacial (jaw and facial) area. Although primarily associated with teeth among the general public, the field of dentistry or dental medicine is not limited to teeth but includes other aspects of the craniofacial complex including the temporomandibular and other supporting structures. Dentistry is often also understood to subsume the now largely defunct medical specialty of stomatology (the study of the mouth and its disorders and diseases) for which reason the two terms are used interchangeably in certain regions.

The essence of public health dentistry lies in the fact that the area focuses on a community or population as a whole and not individual patients. Public health dentists work towards betterment of overall oral and dental health of their communities. They educate patients to adapt to practices that might help improve their general dental health in the long run. Public health dentistry also concentrates on patient education, increased awareness of government programs and efforts towards community dental health and wellness.

This dental specialty focuses on any and every disease around the “Oral Cavity” i.e. mouth, “Maxillofacial” i.e. Jaws and all related structure like salivary glands, facial muscles, Temporomandibular Joints, facial muscles & the perioral skin. Oral & Maxillofacial Pathology covers a vast range of pathological disorders ranging from congenital ones like Malocclusion, Eagle Syndrome to acquired ones like Gingivitis, Herpes Simplex & Oral Candidiasis. Some areas of Oral & Maxillofacial pathology even extend to the treatment of complex conditions Sojourn syndrome, Oral Cancer.

Endodontic is the dental specialty that is concerned with the overall health of the dental pulp and the tissues surrounding the teeth. The ADA defines Endodontic as the “study and practice encompass the basic and clinical sciences including biology of the normal pulp, the etiology, diagnosis, prevention and treatment of diseases and injuries of the pulp and associated per radicular conditions.” The evolution of Endodontic in the last decade has significantly contributed to the recent increase in the quality of dental treatment.

Dental pulp is the soft live tissue inside a tooth. Dental pulp contains stem cells, known as Dental Pulp Stem Cells. The finest Dental Pulp Stem Cells are found in a baby teeth or milk teeth. The stem cells from the milk teeth are 'mesenchyme' type of cells i.e. cells that have the ability to generate a wide variety of cell types like chondrocytes, osteoblasts and adipocytes. Chondrocytes are cells that have the ability to generate cartilage, which can play an important role in the treatment of arthritis and joint injuries. Osteoblasts are cells that have the ability to generate bones. Adipocytes are cells that have the ability to compose adipose tissue, specialized in storing energy as fat. In essence, dental stem cells can generate solid structures of the body such as bone, new dental tissue, cartilage and muscle. New research suggests the potential (currently under experimental research) to regenerate nerves. This is being studied further for use in dentistry and medicine.

Good oral/dental health translates to good health overall. Dental problems such as cavities or gum disease can impair your ability to eat and speak properly, cause pain and bad breath. And what many people may not realize, is that poor dental health can have a profoundly, negative affect on areas outside of the mouth, including your heart, diabetes, pregnancy and chronic inflammation, such as arthritis to name a few. Some studies suggest that the bacteria in gum disease can travel to your heart and cause heart disease, clogged arteries or stroke

Oral health is the state of the mouth, teeth and orofacial structures that enables individuals to perform essential functions such as eating, breathing and speaking, and encompasses psychosocial dimensions such as self-confidence, well-being and the ability to socialize and work without pain and discomfort.

Restorative dentistry focuses on repairing and replacing damaged, decayed, or missing teeth to restore oral health and function. It includes treatments like fillings, crowns, bridges, implants, and dentures. A restorative dentist collaborates with the patient to create a personalized treatment plan, addressing individual needs and lifestyle. The process may involve multiple visits, ultimately enhancing oral health and quality of life.

Cosmetic dentistry enhances the appearance of teeth, mouth, and smile through procedures like teeth whitening, veneers, dental implants, and crowns. It aims to boost confidence and overall oral health but doesn't treat or diagnose dental diseases. The focus is on improving the aesthetic aspect of a person's smile.

Orthodontics is a dental specialty focused on diagnosing, preventing, and treating irregularities in both dental and facial structures. Orthodontics use various appliances like braces and retainers to correct misaligned teeth and jaws, aiming to enhance appearance and function. Treatment typically involves two stages, starting with diagnosis and treatment planning, including x-rays, photographs, and impressions of the teeth and jaw.

Forensic Dentistry or Forensic Odontology involves the handling, examination, evaluation of dental evidence in a criminal justice context. Forensic dentistry is used in both criminal and civil law. Forensic dentists assist investigative agencies in identifying human remains, particularly in cases when identifying information is otherwise scarce or non-existent for instance, identifying burn victims by consulting the victim's dental records.

Prosthodontists are experts in the restoration and replacement of teeth they make smiles look beautiful and function the way they should. Maxillo facial prosthetics, Implant-based prostheses, Management of temporo-mandibular disorders, Dentures, Crowns, bridges, and full or partial dentures are just some of the procedures that can help you regain your smile and improve your appearance and self-confidence. Another option is dental implants, a more permanent solution that has improved greatly over the last ten years, thanks to the pioneering techniques of prosthodontists

A Dental Nurse supports the dentist in all aspects of patients dental care. A dental nurse could help any member of the dental team clinical and dental technicians/technologists, hygienists and therapists – treat patients of all ages. Some specialized for a check-up while others will have more complicated treatment. In a dental practice, a dental nurse will welcome patients and provide direct backing with the treatment itself: Taking responsibility for the decontamination of instruments, upholds dental practicing equipment ensuring that all relevant materials and supplies are in place, looking after patient records including the notes when the dentist is checking a patient, working closely with the dentist, responding quickly to queries and generally keeping the surgery ready for use.

Every interaction between your dental practice and a patient is a component of marketing. The need for better dental marketing has increased with the public’s awareness, as well as industry need to develop better services. Because of the flood of information on the internet, average new patient is more aware and educated concerning the aesthetic options available today from a dentist. As a result, a higher quality dentist is being requested that they have to develop a Comprehensive Marketing Strategy

Dental sleep medicine is an area of dental practice that focuses on the use of oral appliance therapy to treat sleep-disordered breathing, including snoring and obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). Approximately 25 million adults have obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), which can cause them to stop breathing hundreds of times a night for anywhere, from a few seconds to more than a minute. Sleep apnea is a chronic condition that occurs when your muscles relax during sleep, allowing soft tissue to collapse and block the airway. As a result, repeated breathing pauses occur, which often reduce your oxygen levels. These breathing pauses are followed by brief awakenings that disturb your sleep

Oral cancer, also called mouth cancer, forms in the oral cavity, which includes all parts of your mouth that you can see if you open wide and look in the mirror. Your lips, gums, tongue, cheeks, roof or floor of the mouth. Oral cancer forms when cells on the lips or in the mouth mutate.

Oral cancer most often appears as a growth or sore in your mouth that doesn't go away. It's a kind of head and neck cancer. You may hear it called mouth cancer or oral cavity cancer. If it's in the back of your mouth or upper throat, that's oropharyngeal cancer.

The stage of oral cancer is one of the most important factors in evaluating treatment options. A stage I oral cancer tumor means the primary tumor is 2 cm across or smaller and no cancer cells are present in nearby structures, lymph nodes or distant sites. A stage II oral tumor measures 2–4 cm across and no cancer cells are present in nearby structures, lymph nodes or distant sites. Depending on the stage of Oral Cancer the type of surgery is recommended

Oral microbiology is a complex ecological system where up to 700 species of microorganisms that have been identified .Some of the predominant groups present in the mouth includes Streptococcus, Neisseria, Veillonella, Actinomyces and other obligate anaerobes. These organisms maintain a mutualistic relationship with the host by preventing pathogenic species from adhering to the mucosal surface. Oral microflorae can cause dental plaques and are also a common cause dental caries and periodontal disease. An understanding of the oral environment and microbial interactions leads to understanding the main causes for the onset of oral diseases.

Dental anesthesia is the specialty of dentistry that deals with the management of pain through the use of advanced local and general anesthesia techniques. It is the discipline in dentistry that manages pain and anxiety through the use of local anesthesia, sedation, and general anesthesia. Dental Anesthesiology educates graduate, pre-doctoral, and dental hygiene students in the management of pain, fear, and anxiety associated with dental treatment.

Oral implantology is a discipline filled with complexity. The field demands its practitioners to have a high level of expertise in a vast array of areas, many of which evolve at a fast rate. The oral environment is dynamic, and perfect healing conditions are not always possible. Complications will inevitably happen, but steps can be taken to prevent them. These include a thorough and comprehensive medical/dental history; radiographic survey including CBCT; A strong working knowledge of head and neck anatomy as well as surgical, prosthetic, pharmacologic, and follow-up care principles; and the ability to identify and treat a wide array of complications should they occur.

Pediatric Dentistry is the branch of dentistry dealing with children from birth through adolescence. Early Childhood Caries which is also known as tooth decay can develop rapidly in children. Children can also be affected with some rare oral diseases like Gingival Fibromatosis which will eventually result in disturbance in overall health of a child. Common oral problems in children are Tooth Decay, Gum Disease, Teeth Grinding,Thumb Sucking etc. Pediatric dentists promote the dental health of children as well as serve as educational resources for parents.
